Make a natural choice

Last Updated: 04/23/2024

We understand what we put in our bodies, but do we really know the effects of what we’re putting on our bodies? Here’s an introductory guide to why natural ingredients are better for our breathing, living and healing functions.

We are exposed to more than 200 synthetic chemicals every single day. These toxins are absorbed into our bodies through the air we breathe, the food we eat, the pharmaceutical medicine we take as well as the deodorants, lotions and other personal care products we put on our largest organ – our skin. Over time, these chemicals build up and deplete our immune system, allowing illness and stress to take hold.

Here are three synthetic ingredients, where to look for them and the natural alternatives we stand by.

Parabens: synthetic preservatives

Found in makeup, body washes, deodorants, shampoos and facial cleansers, parabens are usually used to preserve the shelf-life of a product. Due to its hormone-disrupting properties, this ingredient has been linked to reproductive issues and other health concerns. We use innovative natural ingredients (like the radish root ferment in Carrot Lotion to keep our products fresh over time. We also blend and ship our products in small batches so that fresh ingredients don’t sit on the shelf.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): a harsh cleansing agent

Used as a detergent in products to make them bubble and foam, SLS can damage the lipid layer of your skin. Look out for these guys in lotions, soaps, shampoo, bubble bath, toothpaste, dish soap, laundry detergent and shaving cream. By relying on aeration to create a foam, we’ve blended a natural hand soap that is rich enough to also be used as a shaving cream without the use of harsh foaming agents.

Synthetic Fragrances: a chemical substance made to imitate natural scents

Primarily derived from petrochemicals (what we use to fuel our cars) to replicate the scent of plants. Synthetic fragrances have been known to contain toxins and synthesizers that cause allergic reactions. Try to avoid products with the ingredient “fragrance” on them and reach for plant-derived perfumes instead. All five of our beautiful perfumes are made with only plant-based ingredients like jasmine, rose otto and sandalwood essential oils.

Plant-based ingredients help our bodies recover from the harmful effects of our environment. By choosing natural ingredients, you’re not only avoiding synthetics, you’re benefiting from the healing power of plants.
